Low-Fat Substitutions for Butter (Infographic)

If you’re trying to eat healthier, these low-fat substitutions for butter will help cut the fat when you’re baking or frying!  We’ve included a handy infographic to keep and share.

Baking

Make the following substitutions for butter in your recipes, at a rate of about 2/3 of the amount of butter in the recipe.  For example, you would use 2/3 of a cup of applesauce for every 1 cup of butter called for.  You may need to tweak it a bit depending on which substitute you use.

  • Pureed Fruit
  • Pureed Vegetables
  • Low-Fat Margarine (amount depends on the brand used)

Frying

You can use the following substitutions for butter in the frying pan.  Frying over lower heat will help keep items from sticking.

  • Nonstick Cooking Spray
  • Nonstick Pan
  • Chicken or Beef Broth
  • Pureed Fruit
  • Pureed Vegetables
  • Wine

Great ideas! I substitute in most things but there are some that I like to use butter for, like shortbread cookies. I only use butter to baste bread & rolls too. I won’t use margarine for those either.

Honestly, I don’t even notice when I replace butter in cooking. I do like it on toast though…..nothing will replace that!
